Who can legally drive a T3B quad on the road?

A T3b quad is classified as a category of agricultural or forestry tractors and machines under the Highway Code. This classification, distinct from the L6e or L7e categories reserved for quadricycles, determines who is allowed to operate it on the road, with what license, and under what conditions.

Category T3b: what this homologation implies for the quad

The letter T in the vehicle nomenclature designates agricultural and forestry tractors. A T3b quad is a motorized wheeled vehicle designed for agricultural or forestry work, whose maximum speed by construction does not exceed a low regulatory threshold (generally limited to 40 km/h on the road).

This classification has a direct consequence: the T3b quad is not subject to the same rules as a leisure quad homologated L7e. Its legal framework aligns with that of agricultural machinery, not with that of road quadricycles. Registration, insurance, and driver obligations therefore follow a distinct regime.

To fully understand the conditions to be met before driving a T3b quad on the road, one must first identify the required license category and the declared use of the vehicle.

Required license for a T3b quad: B license or agricultural license

Since January 1, 2024, the driving rules for homologated T3b quads are clearly aligned with the regime for tractors. Two scenarios arise depending on the use.

Exclusive agricultural or forestry use

When the T3b quad is used strictly for agricultural or forestry work, the regulations do not systematically require holding a standard driving license. A farmer or an employee linked to a farm can travel on public roads to reach a plot, for example, without a B license, provided they adhere to the speed limit specific to these vehicles.

Use outside the agricultural framework

Any non-agricultural use requires a B license and a minimum age of 18 years. The driver must hold a valid license. There is no exemption for holders of AM or B1 licenses, which only cover mopeds and light quadricycles.

T3b quad training: no legal obligation, but growing practice

National regulations do not make specific training mandatory for driving a T3b quad on the road. The B license is sufficient from a strictly legal standpoint. The situation on the ground diverges significantly from this minimal framework.

Since 2022-2023, more and more agricultural employers are imposing internal or external training before allowing an employee to take a T3b quad on the road. These trainings, sometimes modeled after agricultural CACES, cover vehicle handling, driving on roads with other users, and maneuvers in rough terrain.

This trend is not anecdotal. A T3b quad behaves differently from a car: high center of gravity, absence of differential on some models, specific braking. The B license certifies the ability to drive a light vehicle, not the mastery of a four-wheel drive agricultural machine on open roads.

Mandatory and recommended safety equipment for riding a T3b quad

The only legally mandatory equipment for a driver of a T3b quad on the road is a homologated helmet. The absence of a helmet exposes the driver to a fine and point deduction.

Several prevention organizations, including MSA (Mutualité Sociale Agricole) funds, have recommended since 2019 a more comprehensive equipment for driving T3b quads on the road:

  • Homologated gloves, which protect the hands in case of falls or gravel projections, common on access paths to plots
  • High-top shoes covering the ankle, to limit sprains and injuries in case of lateral overturning
  • Back and joint protections (knees, elbows), similar to those worn by motorcyclists, which reduce the severity of injuries in case of impact

These recommendations specific to T3b exceed the legal framework, but they reflect feedback from accidents reported in agricultural settings. A quad without a body or safety cage exposes its driver as much as a motorcycle.

Technical inspection, insurance, and registration of the T3b quad

The registration of a T3b quad requires a registration document mentioning category T. The vehicle must be insured at least for civil liability, like any motorized land vehicle operating on public roads.

The technical inspection follows the regime applicable to agricultural vehicles. The modalities differ from those of a private vehicle: the periodicity and the points of verification are not the same as those of a car or an L7e quad. The owner must inquire at an authorized center for T category vehicles.

A point to watch: a quad sold as “T3b” but lacking a registration document or registered in another category cannot legally operate on the road. The consistency between homologation, registration document, and actual use of the vehicle determines the legality of circulation.

T3b quad and L7e quad: two regimes not to be confused

The confusion between these two categories remains common among buyers. An L7e quad is a heavy motorized quadricycle, subject to a maximum speed of 90 km/h, with no restrictions on agricultural use. A T3b quad is an agricultural vehicle, speed-limited, whose primary use must remain linked to farming.

  • The L7e quad requires a B license, allows circulation on all roads (except highways), and requires two registration plates
  • The T3b quad requires a B license outside agricultural use, limits speed on the road, and falls under agricultural technical inspection
  • An unregistered quad, whether presented as T3b or L7e, remains prohibited on public roads and confined to private land

The choice between T3b and L7e depends on the intended use, not on engine power or price. Buying a T3b quad for purely recreational use on the road exposes one to insurance refusal and fines in case of inspection.
